Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, multiple associations join the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. They provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support individuals and their families with mental illness. This year the theme for the month is ” You are not alone.” Many people have suffered from the pandemic so it’s important that we take time to listen and talk to people who may be experiencing mental health issues.
Below are some tips that you can complete to help keep track of your mental health or anyone around you.
1. Value Yourself:
Treat yourself with kindness and respect. Make time for your favorite hobbies or favorite projects. This could be gardening, reading a book, building objects, listening to music and more.
2. Take Care of Your Body:
- Eat nutritious meals
- Avoid smoking
- Drink plenty of water
- Exercise daily
- Get enough sleep
3. Surround yourself with good people:
People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Make fun plans with family and friends, or seek out activities where you can meet new people.
4. Learn how to deal with Stress:
Stress is apart of life, so finding a way to cope with your stress can make things go a lot easier. You can do Yoga, Exercise, take a nature walk, play with your pet or try journal writing as a stress reducer. Also remember to smile and laugh. Research shows that laughter can boost your immune system.
5. Get help when you need it:
Seeking help is a sign of strength — not a weakness. Therefore, treatment is effective and people who get the appropriate help can recover and live a rewarding life.
