What is Stress?
Stress is the body’s natural defense against predators and danger. It causes the body to flood with hormones that prepare its systems to evade or confront danger. People commonly refer to this as the fight-or-flight mechanism.
Common Causes of Stress?
People react differently to stressful situations. What is stressful for one person many not be stressful for another, and almost any event can potentially cause stress.
Some Major Life Events That Can Cause Stress:
- Lack of time and money
- Job issues
- Relationships, marriage, divorce
- Family or Friendship issues
- Traumatic Events
How Can We Treat Stress?
- Nutrition – a balanced diet containing plenty of fruit and vegetables can help maintain the immune system when stressed.
- Exercise – physical activity increases your overall health and your sense of well-being, which can boost your energy throughout the day. Exercising helps increase the production of endorphins which is the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters.
- Time – take time to organize your schedules, relax and pursue your own interests/dreams.
- Priority Management – spend a little time organizing a daily to-do list and focusing on urgent or time sensitive tasks.
- Relaxation and Breathing – Meditation, massages, and yoga can help reduce stress. Breathing and relaxation techniques can slow down the heart rate and help promote overall relaxation.
- Talking – Sharing feelings and concerns with family, friends, and work colleagues may help a person “let off steam” and reduce feelings of loneliness.
Stress happens to us all and affects us in different ways. Its important that we find the best ways to deal with stress. I find it best to find two things that I truly enjoy and use those activities to deal with my stress. We shouldn’t feel ashamed or overpowered when we are stressed. There are many different techniques that can help you deal with stress! During this month I hope you can find at least two things that will help you deal with stress.
